Ready to get out and explore as the weather warms up? Consider a visit to one of America’s oldest known examples of Italianate style architecture, which happens to be Blandwood Mansion located in downtown Greensboro!
About Blandwood Mansion
Blandwood Mansion had humble beginnings. It was originally built by Charles Bland in 1795 as a Federal style two-story, four-bedroom farmhouse . It eventually had two expansions. In 1822, the owner added two rooms in the same Federal style architecture.
The second expansion was much grander. It took place under the ownership of progressive North Carolina Governor John Motely Morehead. He owned the house from 1827 until his death in 1866.
The Blandwood Mansion visitors see today was designed by nationally renowned New York City architect Alexander Jackson Davis. The additions featured a central three-story tower, stucco walls, and a low roof line connecting the central tower to two flanking buildings. Those buildings served as Gov. Morehead’s law offices and the kitchen. The addition was finished in 1846.
